You must come back, I will wait for you.

It was because of a person, because of a picture, because of a line of dialogue, because of reading a book.

“Dear Cecilia, our fate remains unfinished.”

Through a series of misunderstandings, an unbreakable love turned into the most absurd tragedy due to a child’s false accusation. Cecilia and Robbie’s love began in their childhood, with no secrets between them. It started with a broken vase by the pool, leading to a series of incredible events. When Robbie bravely expressed his passionate love to Cecilia for the first time, that moment determined that they would always be together forever.

Brianna’s false accusations led to Robbie’s imprisonment. But three years in prison did not extinguish the flame of their love. Being released from prison became like a lighthouse for Robbie during those three years, helping him endure the hardships and darkness. After three years, they thought they would meet again, but what awaited Robbie and Cecilia was the cruelty of World War II. After being released, Robbie rushed across the English Channel to join the war against Germany. Under the brutal war conditions, life became like imprisonment again. On the battlefield, there were constant dangers, and Robbie was always on the verge of death. Their letters kept him going, enabling him to survive on the battlefield, just for her sake. “You must come back, I will wait for you.” This witnessed their great and faithful love.

False accusations and death cannot stop a great love.

There is no self in the face of war

McEwen’s skillful writing style allows readers to easily understand the cruelty of war and the insignificance and despair of individuals. In the first part, Robbie Turner is still the vibrant young man who could be called Robbie. But by the time the war begins, Robbie Turner has become just a synonym for “Turner,” not the Robbie who had his own identity. In war, he has no choice but to continue fleeing, one defeat after another.

During his escape, he witnessed everything becoming fragmented in the face of war. Even when he chose to follow his conscience at some point, he couldn’t change reality. He continued to see the deaths of young people and the craters left by bombs. This was a stark contrast to what he saw in the small town where he graduated. There were no clear lakes, no green lawns, no orderly streets or villages. Instead, there was only endless smoke, constant noise, and endless bloodshed, along with rotting corpses and their stench.

In war, survival becomes the only important thing, and also the only difficult thing.

Atonement

If war hadn’t come, perhaps all this suffering would have been caused by Brianna’s selfish “adult thoughts”. For a 13-year-old girl, could she truly understand what love really means? What lies behind all these things she sees?

I am old, silent, and too attached to my remaining life. I face a wave of forgetting, followed by permanent oblivion... Love never ends. As long as my last manuscript remains, my pure and unique sister and her prince will love each other forever... I believe that bringing the lovers in my novels together is not a sign of weakness or avoidance, but rather a great act of kindness, a resistance against forgetfulness and despair. I gave them happiness, but it wasn’t out of selfishness. I hope they will forgive me.

  • But what does “guilt” mean in this era? That question doesn’t make sense anymore. Everyone is guilty or innocent. No one can be saved just because of one testimony. There aren’t enough people, enough pens and paper, enough peace and patience to record all the testimonies and collect all the sins committed by everyone. Did you not kill anyone today? But how many people’s deaths did you turn a blind eye to?

  • The river flows with spring tides, towards the sea between blue and green colors.

  • I am old, silent, and too attached to my remaining life. It’s not like that, it’s not even that bad.

  • After our hardships, love begins to grow.

  • You must come back, I will wait for you.
